Bad Taste

There are certain joys of fine things, but there is often an even better joy in the mundane. I love having a good IPA or Russian stout, but a shitty pilsner can do the same job at half the price. This appears most prominently in my taste in food. While the rest of the world seems to be moving towards the "foodie" craze, I would be perfectly content with the ol' bachelor chow for the rest of my days.

Being a foodie requires time and/or money, and I would much prefer to spend that time on other activities, like going for long bike rides or sitting on the couch. Discovering my passive needs related to food really opened up possibilities for me. At first, it was simply realizing that meat was not essential for a meal. Later, I expanded to discard most other courses and variety, and have somewhat dispensed with the concept of meals (except breakfast of course). I wonder if those tech heroes who wear the same shirt every day have found the joy of simplicity in meals. One less thing to think about, and quick trips to the store to find exactly what you need, although I get marketed various smoothie-based meal replacements regularly that actually are somehow less appealing than a bowl of unflavored vegetables.

Moving to the Netherlands has really opened my eyes to how bland and tasteless food and drink can be. Although the place has plenty of nice restaurants and delicious breweries, the local food is basically fried meat paste. Finding fried crap is about as easy as it is at a fair in Texas.

Ultimately, food is just a way to get energy to do things. If you like spending that energy on the food itself, then good for you! If you are like me, then there is no shame in that either. Now it's time for me to snack on some raisins instead of eating a proper dinner.
