Momentum

Starting things is a challenge, but keeping them going is easy. On bike tours, I have no problem getting up with the sun each day and getting out of camp, but if I mix things up and stay in a hotel, it is much more of a challenge, as is the next day camping. I have gotten out of the house on an early run every day for the past few weeks, but before that I had a streak of putting off the run to "just check the internet real quick" each day. If I can put on my clothes and get out of the house, the rest of the run is easy. If I want to ride 100-200 km on a Saturday, this is no problem; the challenge is merely opening the front door of my apartment to get outside.

Stopping a thing is equally easy. Go one day without a run, why not go everyday without a run? Skip a day of writing, why bother continuing. It can be a good thing, as it makes it easier to kill unnecessary habits, but it also makes it easy to kill the challenging, but ultimately enjoyable habits.

In the current world, all of this seems to be amplified. Without distinct points breaking a rhythm, everything just continues forever. This must be what Newton was discussing in his laws, that without a stopping force, things just keep happening. Getting out of the country is the perfect time to reflect on the activities that are most enjoyable, and having a chance encounter at a concert is a perfect time to form new bonds. Without this cycle of change, it's just work, video games, repeat.
