Reading During Corona

Somewhat surprisingly, I ended up reading less last year than I have in years past. At first, I wanted to put this to a lack of focus while I am at home, and that I normally read while I am at the pub; however, that is not entirely true. Upon further analysis, I tend to find the best times to read in those moments between different activities. Maybe I plan to head to a class in the evening, but it is a bit later than my normal work schedule, so I will find a place to read for the hour in between at a pub or in a park so that I do not have to bike back and forth across town. I also tend to read significant amounts while travelling, which was obviously greatly reduced this year. This can be international travel for pleasure, or just the many different train rides within the Netherlands to go to meetings or different activities.

Perhaps this means I am not quite a deliberate reader. I try to find the energy to just put on some music and read in my house, but I usually drift away quickly, even with a very entertaining book. I need an excuse to read, or to be in a place where I have few other options. The allure of a phone is always nice, but I tend to only enjoy scrolling as a way to procrastinate some other thing I would like to do, rather than a deliberate activity (especially in a pub or park).

Without having to squeeze in reading so much throughout the year, I am left reading right before bed, where I usually manage a page or two before completely falling asleep, then waking up two hours later to turn off the light. I have found the Kindle to be a perfect accessory to this routine, as it saves my place in the book and does not hit me in the face as I start to drift away.
