Trimming, Sanding, and Throwing

Another Monday, and another day at ceramics class. I learned how to trim my bowls, and was nearly successful on the first one. Unfortunately, I ended up putting a hole in the first one while trying to sign the bottom. I just wanted to make sure that I would be able to find it after it was fired in the kiln. The second one was much better, and I managed to make the bowl look pretty good.

I had two bowls that I made two weeks ago that did not get wrapped well enough. They were too dry to be able to trim, but I managed to sand them down so that they would be able to be fired. Sanding a mostly-dry bowl was a good experience, as I was able to learn more about how the clay works. The bowls will also be functional, and perfect for destroying on a particularly rough day.

Two attempts at throwing bowls were completely unsuccessful, but it is always nice to get some practice that will hopefully help in creating better bowls in the future! I only snapped a picture of one trimmed bowl during class (right before I poked through the bottom).
